How to Install Click-Lock and Peel-and-Stick Flooring

Prepare the subfloor

A clean, dry, level surface is the foundation of a good floor. Sweep and clean the existing floor, fix any major dips or bumps, and make sure it’s fully dry. Most click and peel-and-stick floors lay over existing hard floors.

Let the flooring acclimatise

Leave the planks in the room for a day or two before fitting, so they adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity. This prevents gaps or buckling later, especially important in India’s climate.

Click-lock installation

  1. Start along one wall, leaving a small expansion gap at the edges.
  2. Angle each plank’s edge into the previous one and click it down.
  3. Stagger the joints row to row for strength and a natural look.
  4. Cut edge planks to fit, and finish with skirting or trim to cover the gap.

Peel-and-stick installation

  1. Make sure the subfloor is spotless and dry — adhesion depends on it.
  2. Peel the backing and press each tile firmly into place, working from a straight starting line.
  3. Smooth out as you go and butt tiles snugly together.
  4. Cut edge pieces with a sharp knife to fit.

Leave an expansion gap

Floors expand and contract slightly with temperature and humidity. Leaving a small gap at the walls (hidden by skirting) prevents buckling.

Finishing touches

Add skirting boards or edge trims for a neat finish, and clean the new floor. Avoid heavy foot traffic on peel-and-stick floors for a little while so the adhesive sets.
